A New York City police officer is dead after he was shot by a 9mm bullet in a Brooklyn neighborhood.

The officer was identified as 28-year-old Joseph Epps, a sergeant in the 9th Precinct, who was shot at close range while on patrol.

He died on Saturday morning at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Police Commissioner William Bratton announced Epps’ death on Twitter, saying, “The loss of Joseph Eppson is a terrible loss to the 905.

We are deeply saddened by his passing.”

Epps was a member of the NYPD’s Tactical Operations Team, according to police.

The department also released a statement Sunday morning.
